Roman Calendar
© 1995 Leo C. Curran
Roman Calendar is a Macintosh program that will automatically
produce an 8.5" by 11" wall calendar for any month of any year. The
square for a given day of the month will contain the day's number
according to our calendar (e.g., "2"), the day's number as the Romans
counted it (e.g., "IV" for the fourth day before the Nones), and the full
Latin name of the day (e.g., "ante diem IV Nonas Apriles"). Since some of
the names are too long to fit in the squares if printed in full, the program
will sometimes abbreviate "ante diem" as "a.d." and/or omit some of the
letters from the end of the name.
The "Calendar Specifications" Dialog Box
This is the dialog box that you will see when the program starts.
Simply click on your choices. After you have made all of your choices,
click on the "Done" button.
Note that February in leap years is at the end of the list of months.
Consult a printed calendar for the year desired to determine the day of the
week that the month begins on. Roman Calendar "knows" how many days
are in the month chosen and whether the Nones and Ides come early or late
in that month.
For the years 1995-2004 the program will automatically print the
year ab urbe condita in Roman numerals (e.g., "A.U.C. MMDCCXLVIII");
if you choose "None," no year numerals will be printed.
The "Font Size" choices affect only the full Latin names of days. If
the "Normal" size is too small for your printer to print clearly, choose
"Larger."
Quitting the Program
After you have finished a calendar, click on "Quit" in the "File"
Menu. If you wish to print a second calendar (for the same or for a
different month) or if you have printed a calendar and now want to print a
list of names of days, run the program again.
Roman Calendar is Shareware
As you may know, "shareware" is the term in the computer world
for software that the user can obtain for free but must pay for if he/she
decides to keep and use it. You may at no cost try out Roman Calendar and
give copies of it to your colleagues. If you decide the program is not worth
using, delete your copy of it. If you decide the program is worth using, the
cost is $20. Please send your check to Leo C. Curran (Home address: 4317
Harlem Road, Snyder, NY 14226. Office address: Classics Department,
SUNY at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260). Your payment will make you a
registered user, eligible for future updates/improvements in the program.
